GPS For The Blind, including a "White Cane" with a one-button operating system is the latest innovation for those who are blind or partially visually challenged.
Online, March 29, 2014 (Newswire.com) - Having a sense of independence is important to most people, especially those who are "challenged" in some way. For those who are blind or visually impaired the GPS For The Blind can provide that independence. The GPS For the Blind is an electronic assistive device for blind and visually impaired persons. A talking GPS navigation system, GPS For The Blind, is the integration of the talking GPS hardware into a PDA-like device with a Braille keyboard and special function key inputs, voice guidance directions, and safety alert capability.
A companion electronic white cane provides further safe travel utility for GPS For The Blind and allows the user to define potential hazard areas along a given route with one-button operating convenience. Televised test marketing has been completed indicating strong consumer interest in the GPS For the Blind.
The Patent Pending GPS For the Blind was invented by Phillip Bethune of Brooklyn, NY, who said, "The GPS For The Blind device is similar in size to a PDA, and provides voice instructions via a built-in speaker or wired/wireless headset for address navigation. The navigation assistance includes voice instructions with distances announced in feet, blocks, meters, or other common units of measure. The voice instructions similarly announce left and right turn information. Mass transit stop and schedule information can also be downloaded into the unit as well as specific points of interest and potential hazards. The companion electronic "white cane" includes a vibration alert sensor to inform the user when approaching pedestrian hazard areas. A proximity sensor is incorporated into the "white cane" and used to detect obstacles. With the capability to be frequently updated, it can be carried on a hip belt or shoulder strap and can be powered via rechargeable batteries."
